![]() Hi everybody, first of all thanks for visiting my website. I hope that you like what you have seen so far. This page is just to tell you a little bit about me, how I got started, what I like to photograph, my experiences, etc. I am of 1964 vintage and have been seriously into photography since 1999. I joined Washington Camera Club and it was there that I really got my inspiration and encouragement to progress beyond the "6x4" enprint stage. I learned to print and set up a darkroom and I started entering the Camera club competitions. I won the Novices competition the first year then in my second year I was the Club photographer of the year. I started submitting photos to magazines and got lots of rejections.
I continued to persevere and my first success was with the image you see on my home page, the picture of Panwol Lake, taken in Korea in 1998. It was printed in Amateur Photographer. Following this it was printed in Photo Art International and in Best of Friends 8 the yearbook of Creative Monochrome. I had several other images printed in the BoF yearbooks and also in Amateur Photographer Magazine. In 2001 I came 10th in the Amateur Photographer of the Year Competition run by AP magazine. In 2002 I held my first Exhibition which was based on my Lith prints of Newcastle. These can all be seen in the Gallery. Several of these images were also published as a portfolio in Photo Art International Magazine. In 2000 I did an "O" level in photography just so as to get some sort of qualification. It was very enjoyable and I went on to gain my "A" level too. Following on from this I gained my LRPS from the Royal Photographic Society in 2002.
I take many types of photographs as you can see from the Gallery images. I like to experiment with Lith Printing techniques and also enjoy making Cyanotypes and other old processes, although I'm predominantly a digital worker now. I have travelled extensively, mainly in Asia and I have been lucky enough to get a lot of images of people from this amazing region. I have finally realised a dream and last year put all my Asian and street images into a book called "A Different way of life" which was published last year (2009). Some of these images are available on this website too. I will photograph anything of interest really from landscapes to dereliction to people, flowers and anything else that appears to be of interest. I don't really consider myself any particular type of photographer but I do like to think of my work as "fine Art". Some of you may well be wondering what equipment I use. To be honest I believe that you can produce a good image on any camera no matter how cheap or expensive. If you have an eye for composition it doesn?t matter what gear you use. However, that said, If you do have an eye for a good picture, then a good camera with a variety of lenses can definitely enhance your images. I started out with a Praktica BMS with a zoom lens but this has now long since gone. I currently have a Canon EOS3 and a Canon EOS5D, A pair of Contax RTS?s, A 5x4 Large format Shen Hao Field camera, A Kodak 5x7 lg format camera, amoungst many others all with a selection of lenses. A Bronica SQAi with a selection of backs, a very old 9x12cm large format German plate camera, a homemade MDF 10?x12? pinhole camera, a very old Zeiss Ikon box camera and several compacts. It depends on what I want to photograph as to what I use. All are fun to use and sometimes I get superb images from my compacts. I love to rummage around for very old folding cameras too. I like to use these just to see what I can get out of them. If you like my photography, I am very willing to accept commissions for work. Please email me with whatever you have in mind. I will also be happy to do model portfolios.I hope that you enjoy the images on this site as much as I have enjoyed making them. Once you have browsed through, Please leave any comments that you think appropriate and sign my guest book. You may also email me with any questions or comments. Thanks a lot for looking, Enjoy!!! Regards, Roy Frankland LRPS |
